Moving soon (Within The Next Year)

Network Planning

My lease for this apartment is soon up in January. I have the difficult task of not only handling a move, which is stressful, but also dismantling a 27U networking rack with 3 servers on it and rebuilding it at a new location. The good news is that it will likely be a move to a house and I'll be able to run ethernet throughout the house (hopefully) instead of having ethernet in the computer lab and relying on a network of wireless bridges and backhauls to have ethernet in other rooms.

I'll be moving in with a friend who is also very much into self-hosting and networking. We've decided we will each get our own internet provider since this will let us each have sovereignty over our connections and networks. I think it's totally badass that we're basically going to have a whole datacenter in our building. We actually run a little computer club so this new place will basically serve as our headquarters. It will basically be a workgroup with our own infrastructure and I think that is really neat.

The biggest thing I am looking forward to is having symmetrical fiber internet. Right now I am on cable internet so my upload is very slow, but its enough to do everything I need it to. Having symmetrical gigabit internet would basically be the floodgates are open. I would never need to worry about bandwidth again theoretically.
